Top Ten List for Managing Your Sales Team

Published FHBA.com.

Managing salespeople is both challenging and frustrating. A sales manager plays many roles...coach, psychologist, motivator, cheerleader. The list is endless. If you want to maximize your people investment, you must show your sales team how much you care so they can pass that caring attitude to the customer. Here are some tips...

  1. Treat each salesperson as an individual - Everyone has different needs, strengths and weaknesses. People respond differently to supervisory styles. Recognize and reward individual achievements as well as team accomplishments.
  1. Have your antenna up - Be aware of your sales team's mood. Listen closely to keep spirits up at all time.
  1. Maintain on-going training - Whether in house or with an outside consultant, regularly scheduled training helps them perform at their optimum.
  1. Have a Suggestion Box - Have salespeople submit their ideas and reward those whose ideas are implemented.
  1. Maintain an upbeat atmosphere - Selling is a tough job - give constant praise and recognition. Keep inspirational/motivational messages posted.
  1. Play together - A sales team that plays together, stays together. Create a sports team, organize a quarterly event.
  1. Delegate, don't dump - When you delegate an important task, the message is "I have faith in your abilities."
  1. Schedule "Super Sizzlin' Sales Meeting" - Every week, you need to set up an exciting, upbeat sales meeting to motivate, inspire and educate.
  1. Listen up - Promote good humor. E-mail some funnies, fax over sales comics.

...and the number one idea to manage and strengthen your sales team...

1. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE! - Your sales team is a mirror image of you! Are you well groomed? Rested? Working out? Having fun? As a sales manager, you set the tone!
